Doug Dodd

I never met Doug Dodd, but I wish I had. He went to be with the Lord in 2006. He was very close with many members of our church, especially Pastor Hal Bekemeyer, who said that “Doug was a great guy to have with you in the trenches.”

As far as we know, Doug got saved in the campus church at Tennessee Temple, a Christian University. He later moved to Florida and worked for Disney. He had a coworker who kept pestering him with this whole “right division stuff” about which he was highly reluctant to accept. Yet, he knew there was something to it. When he came to visit our church in the early to mid-80’s, he befriended Hal who slowly helped him come to understand and accept Pauline grace doctrines. Once he saw the truth, once he accepted that Paul is our apostle for today, he was on fire for the Lord. He went through Grace School of the Bible and ultimately pastored a grace church in Edgewater, FL, now pastored by our dear friend Des Strydom.

I’m told that Doug was a man who had on the one hand, a playful child-like spirit, and on the other hand, he had a mind as deep as an ocean. He was a man whose early combative spirit was tempered by the doctrines of grace and who would later reject militancy as Hal wrote about. He never married. He felt that if a relationship was going to interfere with his ministry, he wouldn’t do it. There was something special about him that made children naturally drawn to him, and by all accounts, his ministry with children was highly effective. There is no question that Doug had a keen mind and firm grasp of God’s victory program of grace. Of all his articles I’ve read, my favorite is Stopping Sin in the Age of Grace, which I quoted at length in my Freed from Sin message. He nailed that subject better than anyone. He writes:

“Col 2:10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

“This is the mechanics of our victory over sin! When Christ was cut off we were cut off with him ‘in Christ’. The result was that he dies no more, the real and practical result for us is the ‘putting off of the body of sins’. Our spirit is no longer in bondage to the flesh and the sin that resides there. Our soul is no longer in bondage to the flesh and the sin that resides there. Our body, now through the application of sound, Pauline doctrine is to become submissive to our regenerated spirit and soul. That is, it takes on the function that it was meant to have [in] the tabernacle of God.”
